For the next two weeks, we will feature poems from student-writers at the South Education Center in Richfield, MN. For the past month they’ve been working with teaching-writer Alice Paige through our Mentorship Program, which is a collaboration with Austim Sibs Universe (ASU) funded by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC). We want to thank each of these partners and especially Cathy Pinkosky at SEC, who has stewarded this program for the last seven years!
Poem 1
I am Kaiser
The night sky is in the dark
it sings with songs—twinkle, twinkle
little star.
Light circles the sun, it is loud.
We focus too much
on angry.
When I look up, I see outside.
I see clouds.
In my pockets, you would find my hands.
They’re warm
in those pockets.
Hands plunging after people.
Thank you.
Poem 2
The night sky is mom talking
happy quiet black moon
It sings with quiet rest
a short time
I’m all alone
Eating cake circles the sun
with a tummy taste
in my mouth.
We focus too much on talking
and miss what is just above us.
When I look up, I see
the stars.
Make a cake!
Poem 3
Things you could find in my pockets:
sweet & sour candy
music
sleeping
a world of little excitement
fit between soft fabric
in spring, more candy bright
then comes summer & goggles
fall arrives with its hat
then the winter, its need for thick coats & hot chocolate
a life of love spills forth
early morning rush means ready to go
hands plunging after games.
Huh? Goodnight.
Poem 4
The night sky is thunder and storm. It sings owls, bats, wolves.
They are night animals.
Earth circles the sun with warmth and life.
